Quiet in Atlantic basin after Erika fades

NEW YORK, USA (Reuters) -- The US National Hurricane Center was monitoring Tropical Storm Erika in the northeastern Caribbean Sea and a tropical wave in the far eastern Atlantic Ocean early Friday, but both systems had low chances of further development into tropical cyclones in the next 48 hours.

The NHC said it had issued its last advisory on Erika, but the system would be closely monitored for signs of regeneration. There was a low chance - less than 30 percent - of it becoming a tropical cyclone.

The tropical wave, meanwhile, located about 175 miles east-southeast of the Cape Verde Islands, has the potential for slow development over the next couple of days as it moves westward at 10 to 15 miles per hour. There was also a low chance - less than 30 percent - of it too becoming a tropical cyclone during the next 48 hours, the NHC said.

Elsewhere, tropical cyclone formation was not expected.
