USVI Senate President denies reports of police being barred from Legislature

ST THOMAS, USVI -- Senate President Louis Patrick Hill has denied reports that the US Virgin Islands police department was barred from entering either the Capitol Building or the grounds of the Legislature as was reported in the media.

USVI Senator Louis
Patrick Hill
Stated the Senate President, “I spoke last week with Chief Querrard and explained: An employee, not a member of our security staff, standing in the Legislative yard responded to an inquiry for a specific legislative employee from two police officers who remained inside their vehicle. The employee directed the officers to park in the visitors parking area and proceed to the security check point inside.”

“At no time was the employee aware the officers were responding to an emergency call nor did the officers attempt to exit their vehicle or attempt to speak with any of our security personnel who were at their stations. The officers drove through the parking lot, did a visual inspection, and exited the property,” Hill continued.

“The notion that any enforcement officer was or has ever been barred from the Legislature is absurd. We have a well-established, amicable relationship with the VIPD and Chief Querrard was as perplexed about the allegation as was I, until the simple facts became clear, that a simple miscommunication occurred between an employee and the two patrolmen. At a time when all resources should be focused on actual criminal activity which is plaguing our community, I hope this will lay to rest any further rumors regarding the VIPD and the Legislature,” Hill concluded.
