Commentary: Former TCI premier calls British governor a 'racist dictator'

Regrettably, what passes for parliamentary debate in the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) these days resembles little more than ad hominem rants by plainly discredited MPs.

Of course, in light of the pending dissolution of the House of Assembly - pursuant to the TCI Constitution (Interim Amendment) Order 2009 – nothing they say is of any substantive consequence. Yet almost everything they say brings our country into such disrepute that I feel a patriotic duty to register my profound disappointment and dismay.

But since I am loath to contribute to their spectacle, I’m not going to air too much of our dirty laundry in this forum.

Ironically, nothing demonstrated the need for the British to take over the reins of governance in our country quite like the buffoonery that went on in the House on Wednesday. And the ring master of this political circus was none other than our now-suspended premier, Dr. Michael Misick.

Specifically, during his disorderly and delusional rant, he not only called our British governor, HE Gordon Wetherell, a racist dictator, but Misick actually blamed the Governor for the way he turned our country into an embarrassingly dysfunctional UK territory.

Frankly, given his litany of similar rants, one can be forgiven the impression that Misick has the mind of an unruly child who has no appreciation for the consequences of his misbehavior. (Note to his lawyers: this might lay the predicate for a defense of diminished capacity if, or when, he’s charged with a battery of fraud charges....)

Whatever the case, I urge anyone who remains in his inner circle to prevail upon our former premier – in the interest of common decency and common sense - to issue a public apology to Governor Wetherell. Not least because Misick’s parliamentary rant reflects almost as badly upon us (for having elected and reelected this demonstrably troubled man as premier) as it does upon him.

In the meantime, here’s a response that should resonate with Misick’s apparent level of political and intellectual maturity:

You accusing the Governor of acting like a racist dictator is even more hypocritical than the pot calling the kettle black.

That said, I doubt an apology will be forthcoming. Therefore, on behalf of the people of the TCI, I hereby apologize to Governor Wetherell for this and all other venal attempts to undermine his mandate to restore good governance to our country.

In fact, I have no doubt that the vast majority of TCIslanders welcomed the press release the Governor issued earlier this week, in which he indicated that he shares our frustrations with Misick’s vain efforts to restrain him from executing this mandate. Never mind the galling suspicion that Misick is using our money to pay British lawyers to do his bidding in this respect.

But I’m willing to bet my birthright on Governor Wetherell’s assurance that:

“… these delays will not deflect me from the task of implementing, with the full support of the UK Government, recommendations in the Commission's Final Report to restore good governance to the Islands.”
