SAN JOSE, Costa Rica (Reuters) -- Costa Rica kept their hopes alive of making the World Cup finals in South Africa after Alvaro Saborio scored twice in a 4-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago on Saturday.
The result moves Costa Rica into the third automatic qualification spot, two points ahead of fourth-placed Honduras, who lost 3-2 at home to the United States.
Costa Rica went ahead through a freakish own goal, a low cross from Michael Barrantes was sliced by Trinidad defender Radanfah Abubakr and went in off the shoulder of his team mate Julius James.
However, after the break it was all one-way traffic with Saborio crossing to Walter Centeno, who slotted home from close range before Saborio put Costa Rica out of sight with a cool finish in the 62nd minute and then a header from a corner.
The top three teams in CONCACAF go automatically to South Africa while the fourth placed side plays off against the fifth-placed team in South America. | | | | Reads : 716 | | | |
