St Vincent has outright victory and leads points standings

Another catch about to be dropped by the Vincentians in the field.

CASTRIES, Saint Lucia -- St Vincent and the Grenadines have shot to the top of the point standings in the 2009 Windward Islands Senior Cricket Tournament in Saint Lucia, following their outright victory over Dominica on Tuesday at the Mindoo Philip Park, while Grenada was only able to secure first innings points over hosts Saint Lucia.

At the Beausejour Cricket Ground in Gros-Islet, home team Saint Lucia continuing from their overnight 39 for three at the close in reply to 230 all out scored by Grenada, were all out after lunch for 195.

Kenny Lesporis (14), Johnson Charles (three) and Sergio Fedee (seven), were the batsmen who were out on Monday afternoon.

Leading the Saint Lucia attempt on the second day was Gairy Mathurin who remained 62 not out, Denis Louis 46, and Craig Emmanuel 30, with Denis George taking six for 68 and John Olive taking four for 25, bowling for the Grenadians.

Batting a second time, Grenada was 114 for 7, as both teams tried for an outright victory.

Ronald Etienne hit 31, Devon Smith 70 not out, as wicket fell too regularly for the Grenadians to declare.

Saint Lucia’s captain two for 19, and Xavier Gabriel two for 38 as the game finish in a draw.

Earlier, batting first after being sent in, Grenada scored 230, with Andre Fletcher top scoring with 77 which included nine fours and three sixes, and at least five chances.

Devon Smith smacked 52 with five fours while Garfield Charles chipped in with 40.

Bowling for St Lucia, Alex Antoine bagged three for 34, Darren Sammy two for 48 and there were wickets apiece to Craig Emmanuel, Gairy Mathurin, and Audie Alexander on debut.

Meanwhile over at the Mindoo Philip Park in Castries, St Vincent and the Grenadines, led first by a four-wicket haul by Deighton Butler, and then by half-centuries by Alston Bobb and captain Lyndon James, seized the initiative in their opening match, in the 2009 Windward Islands Senior Cricket Tournament here in Saint Lucia.

Having won the toss, the Vincentians sent the Dominicans to take first knock, and were soon celebrating, as wickets fell regularly at 13, 20, 30, 44, 59, 66, 79, 91, 97, and were all out for 101.

Butler finished with figures of four for 39 off 14 overs of which four were maidens. Keron Cotloy had two for 16, Kerical Williams one for 20, Delron Johnson one for eight and Kenroy Peters one for 12; with seven extras bowled.

St Vincent and the Grenadines fared no better in the early stages of their reply, losing wickets at 30, 55, 55, and 81, before captain Lyndon James 40 not out and Alston Bobb 53 not out, steadied the Vincentian ship to finish day one on 164 for four.

The Vincentians went on to score 232 for 7 declared, with Lyndon James being the top-scorer with 79, Bobb did not add to his overnight 53, and Donwell Hector 31.

Bowling for Dominica, Jean Paul finished with three for 58; Kevin James took two for 35, and Kevon Hodge one for 29.

With a deficit of 131, Dominica was unable to secure a draw despite the spate of drop catches.

Six catches were dropped before the first wicket fell at 97, Kenroy Peters bowling with heart and commitment, but was unlucky. In fact the first catch held by the Vincentian team in the Dominica second innings was held by Peters.

Tyron Theophile scored 47 who were first dropped on one, and had numerous chances grassed, before being the first wicket to fall.

His opening partner Martin Mathew was also the recipient of dropped chances went on to score 51.

Alston Bobb grabbed three for 18 with his left-arm orthodox spin, Kenroy Peters three for 15, and Deighton Butler two for 29; bowling for St Vincent and the Grenadine sin the second innings.

With a target of 52 to achieve, St Vincent and the Grenadines knocked off the required runs for the lost of only one wicket, with Salvan Brown remaining 30 not out at the end.
