BASSETERRE, St Kitts (SKNIS) -- Independence Square in St Kitts will be a buzz with activity this Friday, as the Tourism Market Place and Schools Steel Pan Competition climax the 2009 Tourism Awareness Month.

“It’s a perfect way to culminate the month-long celebration,” Coordinator Fitzroy ‘Platini’ Clarke told SKNIS. “The day is packed with fun filled activities and will offer good food and entertainment. It will also provide persons with useful information of various aspects that work together to make St Kitts an exciting destination for visitors.”

From 11:00 am persons will be able to take advantage of special packages from leading hotels on island which will offer reduced prices on rooms, meals, spa and other related services as well as entertainment functions. A number of restaurants will cook and sell meals on-the-spot, giving patrons an opportunity to glimpse the behind-the-scenes working of a kitchen.

Designer booths by local companies Island Hopper, Brown Sugar and His Glory Designs will showcase some of the trendy fashion wear. Not to be outdone, Caribelle Batik will display some of its finer products and provide live demonstrations of how they are made.

The linkages between tourism and other sectors such as agriculture and education will be showcased.

The importance of food security by increasing crop and livestock production will be another feature highlighted by the Department of Agriculture. Delicacies will be on hand, including roasted breadfruit and rabbit, while wine from local fruits such as gooseberry, will be available from farmers as well as locally produced scented candles and bath soap.

At 5:00 pm, the education component will be featured during a Schools Steel Pan Competition. Members of the St Kitts and Nevis Steel Orchestra face off against bands from the Cayon, Sandy Point and Verchilds High Schools. The masquerade, clown and bull folklore groups will add to the festive atmosphere and DJ Ronnie Rascal will bring the curtains down.

Clarke encouraged the general public to go out and support the Tourism Market Place and the Schools Steel Pan Competition. He noted that this was a unique opportunity for the public to learn about the linkages that are necessary to drive the success of a diverse tourism product.

Tourism Awareness Month activities conclude on Saturday, October 31, with the launch of the 2009/2010 National Carnival Season.
