Cuba advocates decolonisation of Puerto Rico at United Nations

HAVANA, Cuba (ACN) -- Cuba once again advocated the decolonisation of Puerto Rico and the Western Sahara during a session of the United Nations Special Committee on Decolonisation on Monday.

“The cause of the Puerto Rican and the Sahrawi peoples should remain a priority for this world body,” said Cuba’s acting representative before the United Nations, Rodolfo Benitez.

The Cuban diplomat recalled that the UN Special Committee on Decolonisation has already passed 28 resolutions on the issue of Puerto Rico and he asked the UN General Assembly to start a thorough analysis on the matter and all its aspects.

He also recalled that, last June, the Special Committee on Decolonisation adopted – for the tenth consecutive year – a resolution on this topic while the Non Aligned Movement (NAM) reiterated that the issue of Puerto Rico is a case of colonisation.

The Cuban acting representative reaffirmed Cuba’s defense of the Sahrawi people’s right to define their own territory and he also ratified Havana’s unlimited support of Argentina’s claim to sovereignty over the Falklands, Prensa Latina news agency reports.
