CORAL GABLES, USA -- During a successful meeting with Puerto Rico Governor Luis Fortuño to discuss the 14th Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Investment Conference (CHTIC 2010) - taking place at San Juan's Puerto Rico Convention Center, May 4-6 the Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association (CHTA) confirmed the governor's participation as the keynote speaker at the Opening Ceremony for the region's most successful and longest-standing tourism investment event.

CHTIC 2010 will bring together hoteliers, tourism officials, developers, bankers, lenders and others interested in Caribbean tourism to discuss and plan investment strategies for the region. With Governor Fortuño's support now confirmed, CHTA anticipates a very well attended conference hosted by the Puerto Rico Tourism Company (PRTC), the Puerto Rico Hotel and Tourism Association (PRHTA) and the Puerto Rico Convention Bureau (PRCB).

"The Government of Puerto Rico is pleased to be the proud host of this conference that will provide us with a unique opportunity to address new investment strategies for the tourism industry in the island and our neighbors in the Caribbean. Tourism has been classified as one of the primary service sectors in our global economy, and plays a leading role in Puerto Rico's economic development. It is our commitment to create new partnerships with the private sector and other destinations in the Caribbean, so we can build new marketing strategies together, and move forward as a strong, competitive region in the industry," Governor Fortuño said.

"We are extremely pleased that Governor Fortuño is making next year's Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Investment Conference a personal priority as it underscores the importance of attracting Caribbean tourism development to ensure our sustainability for the future," said Enrique De Marchena Kaluche, President of CHTA (pictured to the right of Governor Fortuño).

"The 2010 investment conference from May 4 - 6, 2010, will play a pivotal role in determining the nature and trajectory of tourism related investments in the region, and Governor Fortuño is setting a leading example by spearheading the initiative on behalf of Puerto Rico and the Caribbean region," added De Marchena Kaluche.

"The Puerto Rico Tourism Company is hosting CHTIC to showcase opportunities Puerto Rico offers as an investment and business destination," stated Jaime López Díaz, Executive Director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company.

"This conference provides the venue and opportunities to create ties among all Caribbean tourism industry elements and build a stronger and more unified Caribbean destination product for Puerto Rico and the region as a whole," added López Díaz.

"CHTIC is a momentous event for Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, one that provides great potential for investment in our tourism development," said Miguel Vega, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Puerto Rico Hotel & Tourism Association.

"We are grateful to Governor Fortuño and to his administration for their support of this event and to the Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association as well," noted Vega. "Puerto Rico will no doubt host and present CHTIC with the high caliber it deserves."

Building on the momentum achieved in recent years with a growing interest in Caribbean tourism development, CHTIC is the only official tourism investment conference of the Caribbean managed by the region's public and private sector organizations - CHTA (the regional hotel association) and CTO (the public sector tourism body) - and is the only event of its kind which is staged by the region's not-for-profit organizations, with all funds being reinvested in the region for the benefit of the Caribbean tourism industry.

CHTIC was founded by CHTA and CTO in 1997 with the specific objectives of improving the tourism investment and operating climate in the Caribbean, raising awareness of development opportunities and stimulating a continuing flow of equity and loan capital into the region.

"Several major organizations have already confirmed their sponsorship support for CHTIC 2010 which is indicative of the importance of the 2010 conference," said De Marchena Kaluche.

"CHTIC is a must attend event for any company looking to get things accomplished in the Caribbean," said David Callaghan, VP Eastern Region, Resort Sales & Service for Interval International, one of the event's proud sponsors.

"We have sponsored the program since its inception and have always found it to be a great forum to conduct business," noted Callaghan.
