This announcement was made at a media briefing by Ingrid O’Marde of the Antigua Credit Union, following the conclusion of the two-day Summit held in Kingstown under the theme 'Standing firm in uncertain times'.

O'Marde said the Movement will be following the suggestion of Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves who spoke on the topic 'A Crisis was a Terrible Thing to Waste', at the Summit.

O’Marde made the point that the Movement was started in response to the economic challenges that faced the ordinary man and woman decades ago and there are more challenges today. She said even though this is the reality, the Credit Union Movement must ensure that they continue along a sustainable economic path by capitalizing on the challenges that confront the co-operative in these uncertain times.

O’ Marde also noted that coming out from the 7th Annual OECS Credit Unions Summit, recommendations were made to; Build alliances without compromising the credit union co-operative; pool excess liquidity for investment; promote leadership and inter-generational transmission of the ethic of co-operatism and educate people on the role of the co-operative as a mechanism for poverty alleviation, food security and social transformation.

Manager of the East Caribbean Co-operative Central Limited, ECCCL, Marlon Stevenson, said that the Central finance facility was given the mandate to move speedily to ensure they specifically train employees and volunteers in the area of co-operatism.

Stevenson said that while volunteers and employees have been participating in finance training, they have held discussions with numerous educational institutions to have them establish courses that specifically teach Credit Unionism.

Stevenson also announced that the ECCCL will set up the Master Card facility, which will give Credit Union members the opportunity to have a master debit card from their credit union in over 200 locations around the world.

The next OECS Credit Union Summit will take place in St Lucia.
