KINGSTOWN, St Vincent: St Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves left here for Cuba just before noon on Friday on a Cuban jet, courtesy of the Cuban government.

St Vincent: Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves
Minister of Health, Dr Douglas Slater, Dr Gonsalves' personal security officer, Sergeant Christopher Benjamin and Sergeant Zaccheus Parris, his driver, accompanied Gonsalves.

Gonsalves and his delegation could be in Cuba for about two weeks, since he has been ordered by doctors to rest for a while, after he was involved in a motor vehicle accident last Monday.

While on his way into Kingstown from North Windward, a truck driven by Gideon 'Junior' Huggins, smashed into the Toyota jeep Dr Gonsalves was in.

Gonsalves' driver, Sergeant Parris, was knocked unconscious and suffered a fracture in the neck and shoulder. Gonsalves received cuts to his upper and lower lips, which required five stitches and two of his front teeth were displaced.

While in Cuba, Gonsalves may undergo surgery to his mouth and on his right leg. The accident has left him walking with a slight limp.

Deputy Prime Minister, Sir Louis Straker, will act as Prime Minister until Gonsalves returns.
