SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic: President Leonel Fernandez in a public address on Thursday stated that the Dominican Republic will not suffer from the food shortages that currently affect many parts of the world and announced that there will be many incentives for farmers to increase production here in this country.

The president stated that farmers must lower production costs and increase their capacity to produce the main food staples. To accomplish this, the government will make available around 315 million square meters of state-owned lands in the short term, which will be available for lease contract to farmers whose production will contribute to meet the country´s food demand, feed for livestock, as well as to make the surplus available for export.

Fernandez announced that the government is committed to bolstering research and technological innovations to increase productivity and reduce the food unit costs, which at present are not acceptable.

He said the use of biotechnology will be increased as soon as possible to assist all farmers, as well as using genetically modified seeds to raise crop yields and crop quality, which at present is lacking in farming in this country. He stated that the old methods of farming have to be considered but the Dominican Republic has to enter the modern age of farming and crop production.
