PARAMARIBO, Suriname: A recent spate of nighttime assaults on homeless men, which left two vagrants dead, has left police in Suriname clueless over the motives since no suspect has been arrested.

Officials here confirm that since the attacks started on May 18 two homeless men were shot dead by unidentified gunmen in separate incident. A third victim eluded death last week, but had to be hospitalized since he sustained a gunshot wound to the arm.

According to police spokeswoman Maritha Ritfelt-Asontoe, these cases are still being investigated but no suspects have been arrested so far. The first fatal shooting took place on 18 May and a post mortem revealed that the 52-year old victim was attacked with a shot gun.

Just ten days later a 40-years old man was killed, while the third survived an attack on June 1. All attacks took place at night or in the early morning.

In May 2006, vagrants in the Surinamese capital, Paramaribo, were also targeted, leaving six men dead. According to police two of the victims were shot, one doused with fuel and set ablaze, while one vagrant was stabbed and the sixth decapitated by an axe-wielding assailant.

“We are seriously looking into these killings, but we have no clue at all were to look for the suspects,” a detective involved in the investigation said in an invited comment.

In 2006 three teenagers were detained and grilled over their possible involvement in the killing. However they were released due to a lack of evidence. According to investigators the boys acknowledge involvement in beating and harassment of several vagrants but denied any involvement in the fatal attacks.
