Commentary: On your letters about my commentaries on the TCI

By Anthony L Hall

Due to the unusually high volume of letters that have been sent to Caribbean Net News (and to me directly) about my commentaries on the political situation in the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI), the editor asked me to draft an omnibus response. And, I was happy to oblige:

I appreciate the time and effort so many of you have taken to share your thoughts. I especially appreciate that, in many cases, your concerns stemmed from the fact that the TCI has been a favored vacation destination for you for many years.

Caribbean perspective

But rest assured that there’s growing awareness and restiveness amongst all TCIslanders about the threats to our pristine beaches, coral reefs, national parks and nature reserves posed by ongoing (and planned) commercial development. And even though our Premier, Hon. Michael Misick, has announced to the world that our entire country is for sale, we are pursuing all legal and political measures to halt (or prevent) these potential crimes against the environment.

For my part, I feel it is my patriotic duty to continue writing about this TCI government’s corrupt and misguided practices. In particular, I shall continue entreating our British overseers to redeem the salutary neglect of their constitutional duty to ensure good governance in our island paradise.

I would be remiss, however, if I did not take this opportunity to welcome fellow TCIslander David Tapfer to our Caribbean Net News family. Especially since I have no doubt that you have found his detailed and intrepid reports on TCI politics informative and insightful.

I also feel obliged to note that Premier Misick wields such control over the local press that Caribbean Net News is the only medium we have to challenge his government’s policies and misdeeds. Therefore, I am grateful to its owner and managing editor for giving us the freedom to express our grave concerns not only for an increasing number of TCIslanders but also for interested people all over the world to read.

All the same, I am encouraged that, after years of prodding, we’ve finally prevailed upon the British to launch investigations into all of the mismanagement, corruption and scandals I’ve written about in my commentaries. Accordingly, I beg your patience and understanding as these unfold.

NOTE: I am confident that within months, not years, the government of the TCI will be wrested from the clutches of those whose sole motivation for governing is self-enrichment, and put into the hands of those who have due regard for our national motto: Turks and Caicos Islands: beautiful by nature.
