Nevis geothermal reservoir comes to life

CHARLESTON, Nevis: Proof of the existence of a geothermal reservoir on Nevis came this week at West Indies Power’s Nevis I geothermal well when a 30-foot flow of steam burst from the well at 3:30 p.m. making Nevis 1 the first “commercial hydrothermal geothermal well” in the OECS.

Sampling steam flow at Nevis 1
CEO of West Indies Power, Kerry McDonald, indicated that the Nevis I well has been declared a commercial hydrothermal geothermal well by independent consultants and that the flow of steam from the well validates this assessment.

McDonald added that “with this manifestation of the geothermal reservoir at the Nevis 1 drill site, West Indies Power will now commence to develop the production wells on the reservoir so that the proposed 34 megawatt single flash geothermal plant to supply clean, affordable, renewable electricity to Nevis and St. Kitts will become a reality in 2009”.

The reservoir temperature was measured at 250 C (482F) and the bottom hole pressure was measured at 1190 psi. The steam had a neutral ph of 6. 7 (drinking water has a ph of 7). The steam flow will be allowed to continue to flow through the week so that tests can be conducted on the steam and wellhead pressure measured.
