Email To Friend Print Version | CARACAS, Venezuela (Reuters): The British and German embassies in Venezuela were evacuated for hours on Monday from the building housing them both in Caracas after a hoax bomb threat to the British mission, authorities said.
Other offices, including those of Reuters, were ordered to evacuate the 14-story building where hundreds of people normally work.
After police with sniffer dogs scoured the building, the head of Venezuelan's intelligence police told state television it was "a false alarm" sparked by somebody trying to create chaos in the British embassy.
The threat was made by telephone, by a man speaking with an Argentine accent, a building security official said.
Monday is the 25th anniversary of the start of the brief Falklands war between Argentina and Britain.
Police blocked people from entering the building after the evacuation. But they allowed traffic to pass in front and people milled around the entrance steps.
