CARICOM leaders attend EU-LAC summit

GEORGETOWN, Guyana: Hubert Ingraham, Prime Minister of The Bahamas will be among four CARICOM Heads of Government attending the Fifth European Union-Latin American and Caribbean (EULAC) Summit which will be held in Lima, Peru on 16-17 May, 2008.
Other Heads of Government expected to attend are the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Baldwin Spencer, the Prime Minister of Jamaica, Bruce Golding and the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago Patrick Manning. The Vice President of Suriname, Ramdien Sardjoe will represent his country.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and International Business of Barbados, Christopher Sinckler, the Attorney-General and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belize, Wilfred Ellington and the Minister of Health and the Environment of St Vincent and the Grenadines, Douglas Slater will represent their countries while Cheryl Miles, Ambassador of Guyana to Brazil will represent her country. CARICOM Secretary-General Edwin Carrington will also attend.
On 17 May, leaders of the Caribbean Forum of African Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) States (CARIFORUM) and the EU will hold a summit. CARIFORUM consists of the 14 independent Member States of CARICOM along with the Dominican Republic. Mr Carrington is also Secretary-General of CARIFORUM.
The theme of the EU-LAC Summit is “Addressing our Peoples’ Priorities Together” with sub themes of “Poverty, Inequality and Inclusion” and “Sustainable Development: Environment, Climate Change and Energy”. The Summit will be preceded on 15 May by a meeting of Foreign Ministers of the two regions.
The CARIFORUM/EU Summit will address: Priorities for a Sustainable Caribbean-EU Partnership; Regional Integration and Implementing the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA): Strengthening the Pillars of Co-operation; and Balancing Energy Needs with Food Security in the Context of Climate Change. | | | | Reads : 263 | | | |
