MANAGUA, Nicaragua (Bloomberg): Haitian President Rene Preval said the onset of hurricane season in the Caribbean coupled with rising oil prices may deepen the food crisis in his country, the Western Hemisphere's poorest.

Global warming and climate change may lead to an increase in hurricanes in the region this year, Preval told leaders of several South American and Central America countries attending a one-day summit in Managua to address surging food prices.
Rising oil prices were also making it harder for Haiti to buy food, Preval said. Rioting over food prices in Haiti last month killed at least five people and injured hundreds of others, according to World Vision International.
