Barbados minister meets with Irish labour official

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados: Labour officials in Barbados have been learning more about the Irish model of social partnership and tripartism.

This follows a recent meeting between Minister of Labour and the Civil Service, Rawle Eastmond, and Director of Industrial Relations and Human Resources, Irish Business and Employers Confederation (IBEC), Brendan McGinty.

Eastmond explained that Barbados, unlike the Irish, did not have formal, written regulations for its social partnership. He suggested, therefore, that Barbados could exchange information with Irish labour officials on a feasible process for formalising this arrangement.

He also took the opportunity to update McGinty on the implementation of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy and in turn received information on the challenges that Ireland faced in relation to its membership in the European Union.

McGinty said one of the main issues his country faced was the facilitation of migrant labour from neighbouring European nations into the employment sector; a challenge which had implications for Ireland’s social and health services.

The Irish Labour official also explained the rudiments of his country’s labour system, touching on a number of issues such as dispute settlement mechanisms, trade union recognition, relevant qualifications under the EU and protection of workers, both Irish and migrant.
