NEW YORK, USA: The organizers of this year’s Reebok Grand Prix in New York has announced that World Championship 100m gold medallist, Veronica Campbell-Brown of Jamaica will race against American 2005 world champion Lauryn Williams, the woman she edged out in an exciting photo finish last year to win the world title in Osaka, Japan.

Both sprinters will match strides in the women’s 100m dash, a clash that could very well be repeated on a few more occasions before the Olympic Games begin in Beijing, China, later this summer.

Campbell-Brown won the event last year, after clocking a meet record of 10.93 seconds to beat the in form American, at the time, Torri Edwards, who stopped the clock at 10.96. In this race last season, Williams placed fourth with a time of 11.11.

Meanwhile, both sprinters have yet to really test their speeds this outdoor season. Williams only ran a 200m in Miami, last weekend, while Campbell-Brown is yet to get the campaign off to a start.

Meanwhile, Caribbean Net News understands that Bahamian Derrick Atkins could line up in the men’s race.

At the meeting last year, Atkins, who last season won a silver medal at the world championships in Osaka, finished second to American Tyson Gay, the man who also defeated him in Japan.

Reigning Olympic 110m Hurdles gold medallist and World record holder Liu Xiang of China, is also among the short list announced already to compete at the meeting.

The Reebok Grand Prix, which serves as one of the IAAF Grand Prix status event in the 2008 IAAF World Athletics Tour, will take place at the Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island, on May 31.
