According to a press release by CADRES, Dominicans were asked who they would prefer to lead them at this time. “58 percent preferred the present Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, while Leader of the Opposition, Edison James was favoured by 32 percent of the population and Leader of the United Workers Party, Earl Williams had the support of 6 percent of those polled.”
CADRES further stated the likely outcome of an election if it were held in Dominica today: “36 percent of Dominicans would support the Dominica Labour Party, while the United Workers Party received support from 26 percent of those polled and the Dominica Freedom Party was the preferred choice of 3 percent of Dominicans”.
The poll also asked Dominicans to indicate the issue that was most on their minds at this point and “30 percent indicated that they were most concerned about the cost of living, while employment (28 percent) and the economy (14 percent) were the other two major issues identified by the voters”.
According to CADRES, support for the CSME now stands at 59 percent, which is up from 51 percent in 2004 and 50 percent of Dominicans support the decision of the Skerrit Administration to establish diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China, while 15 percent oppose it. CADRES further states that there is a general feeling that “Dominicans have benefited enough from this association, since 54 percent of persons expressed this view and only 17 percent suggested otherwise”.
This latest poll by CADRES is consistent with an opinion poll it conducted in March 2005, just weeks before the May 5 , 2005 General Election.
That poll in 2005 revealed that Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit was by some distance favoured by the majority of respondents to be Prime Minister.
57 percent of persons surveyed indicated they would prefer Skerrit’s leadership, while Edison James came closest with 39 percent.
CADRES is a regional research organization based in Barbados. It has conducted social, economic and political research throughout the Caribbean for political parties, governments, regional and international organizations and private sector clients.
