New Belize government gives Venezuelan funds update

BELMOPAN, Belize: The government of Belize has updated the Belizean public on the status of the “Venezuela Funds” that were being disbursed prior to the General Elections.

The previous ddministration had announced that the government of Venezuela had awarded a grant to Belize in the sum of US$million to be distributed as follows: US$9 million for housing loans and grants and US$1 million for the upgrading of the sporting complex.

The government of Belize through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade says has now received information from the government of Venezuela referring to a Non-Reimbursable Economic Assistance Agreement signed on 28 December 2007, between the Fund for International Cooperation (FACI) and the government of Belize for the sum of US$20 million to be used as follows:

1) US$19 million for the construction and rehabilitation of houses and 2) US$1 million for the construction of an athletics track.

The new government says that Belizeans will recall that the previous administration had announced that the Venezuelan Grant amounted to only US$10 million. This is only half the amount now claimed by Venezuelan authorities. There is clearly a gross discrepancy between what the previous PUP administration said it had received and what the Venezuelan Authorities now say they had given to Belize.

The government of Belize has advised the Belizean public that every effort is being made to come to terms with the real situation and to fully account for all the funds sent, as requested by the Venezuelans. All efforts are now being made to do so. The government of Belize says it will continue to inform the Belizean public of any developments.
