2010 World Cup qualifer: Turks & Caicos at St Lucia

GRAND TURK, Turks and Caicos Islands: The road to the Football World Cup 2010 in South Africa is set to begin with the qualifying rounds for the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football, commonly referred to as CONCACAF, due to be played in early February.

The draw, made late November 2007, will see the Turks and Caicos Islands being pitted against St Lucia.

This will be an historical event for the Islands, as the Turks and Caicos Islands Football Association (TCIFA) will host their first ever FIFA World Cup Qualifying contest at the National Sports Stadium on Providenciales - when they meet St. Lucia on Wednesday, February 6th 2008, with a kick off time of 7.45pm.

Sonia Bien-Amie, General Secretary for the TCIFA said: "This is a momentous ocassion; a milestone, not only for the TCIFA, but for TCI to be hosting and partaking in this competition".

She added that overall goal of the Association is to develop and cultivate a love for football throughout the county, making it an even more popular sport than it already is.

"We want to attract children, and youths of all ages, with the intent to have national teams for both local and international matches".

"The purpose of showcasing this match here is multi-purpose. One, to allow spectators see for themselve a first class event; two, to showcase to the Turks and Caicos national players that they too can compete on a world stage; three, to generate an interest and thust for a sport that is loved by millions around the globe, and finally, a want to be a part of our local Association".
