GEORGETOWN, Guyana (GINA): The United Nations General Assembly has adopted by consensus the role of the United Nations in promoting a New Global Human Order which was first promoted by Guyana’s late President Dr Cheddi Jagan.

The consensus calls on the UN Secretary General to submit a report on the implementation of the resolution to the 65th Session of the General Assembly. The Report should include an assessment of the implications of inequality for development.

Jagan recognised the potential problems of poverty, which could result in the undermining of democracy. He sought to influence world leaders and educate people with regards to "the environment of intense economic and social crisis". Living in a world where issues of politics, the economy, social justice and the environment were at a watershed.

During a World Summit on Social Development held in Copenhagen, Denmark, March 6-12 1995, Jagan put forward his vision, mandates and proposals.

A Ministry of Foreign Affairs press release stated that at the debate on December 17, speakers alluded to the fact that while new and expanding opportunities and greater prosperity had been realised for many States, the contemporary order was increasingly marked by uneven levels of progress. The new Human Global Human Order offers a qualitatively different approach to development that addresses these realities.

The concept was first introduced to the General Assembly by Guyana in 2000. The number of co-sponsors of the resolution has grown to 75 following intense negotiation among member States.
