CASTRIES, St Lucia: Last week, the Preville Merit Foundation was launched in St Lucia, under the distinguished patronage of Governor General Dame Pearlette Louisy. The launching of the Preville Merit Foundation is the brainchild of Pastor Mattheison Preville and his wife, Chrysede Preville.
The foundation seeks to raise and provide funds for needy deserving students attending Seventh Day Adventist schools in St Lucia and attaining at least 3.7 in their grade point average on a term basis. It also seeks to give the student who scores the highest marks from the Seventh Day Adventist primary schools, a scholarship to attend the Seventh Day Adventist Academy.
Similarly, for the student who attains the highest marks in the CXC examinations annually, a scholarship will be awarded to the University of the Southern Caribbean (USC). One student, Kennith Alexander, has already been a recipient of a scholarship to the SDA Academy, courtesy of the foundation, for this current academic year.
In her remarks, Dame Pearlette exhorted students to study hard and adults to set the right examples for the youth to follow.
Dr Cletus Bertin, the feature address speaker, highlighted the theme "Lives can be shaken, let them not be broken", where he encouraged those in attendance to reduce the vulnerability of children and students by doing whatever we can to help them succeed in life.
The logo of the foundation was also unveiled at the ceremony and winning students who had participated in the logo competition were awarded prizes.
Dr Robert Lewis, parliamentary representative for Castries South and an educator in his own right, also offered a few remarks. |
