Email To Friend Print Version | LACOMBE, USA (UPI): A Lacombe, La., repo man has retrieved a 700-foot cargo ship from Haiti amid widespread civil unrest in the country.
F. Max Hardberger, who says he has repossessed about a dozen massive boats for his New Orleans company, Vessel Extractions, since 1991, retrieved the Aztec Express from under guard, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Hardberger was hired by the New Jersey-based mortgage holder on the Aztec Express after its Greek owner died in 2003 and his company failed to make payments on the $3.3 million mortgage. The vessel was being used after the owner's death to haul used cars from the northeastern United States to Haiti, where it was seized by judicial officials after they were bribed by a businessman who planned to purchase the boat in a rigged auction, the Times said.
However, Hardberger had the watchmen stationed on the boat detained by off-duty riot police and pulled the massive cargo ship away from the harbor with a tugboat.
A court in the Bahamas, where Hardberger hauled the boat, upheld the repossession.
