Email To Friend Print Version | GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands: After concerns were expressed by the Cayman Islands Ministers’ Association on the legalisation of civil unions in the UK, the Leader of Government Business in the Cayman Islands, Kurt Tibbetts, chose to open a recent post-Cabinet press briefing with a discussion on the present Marriage Law.

Presently, there is no formal definition of marriage in Cayman Islands domestic legislation, but Tibbetts relayed the Government’s position to the media.
“It is presumed at this point in time that marriage means the union between a man and a woman, but that our Marriage Law does not specifically define that union.”
He then went on to say, “We are looking very seriously within our own domestic legislation and within the constitutional review process to ensure that it is clear what the word marriage means in our legislation.”
Tibbetts chose to speak on this subject to allay “fears as to whether or not we’ll ensure the definition of marriage.”
Citing the recent precedent-setting constitution of the British Virgin Islands that came into effect on 15 June 2007, which states that the marriage process will be defined by domestic legislation, the Cabinet feels confident that they will have “no problem in dealing with the issue of civil unions domestically.”
When further questioned as to his position on the issue of civil unions, Tibbetts said: “There shall be no definition of civil unions in the law.” | | | | Reads : 229 | | | |
