CASTRIES, St Lucia: The Iyanola Council for the Advancement of Rastafari Inc. (ICAR), in collaboration with the Empress Menen Organization (EMO) and the House of Nyahbinghi, has organized the annual celebration of Marcus Mosiah Garvey, a stalwart Pan Africanist.

The celebration will take place over a three-day period. On August 16, 2007, an Arts and Crafts Exposition will take place at the Castries City Hall. A Marcus Garvey Day March will be held in the Gros-Islet Community on August 17, 2007 and finally there will be a Cultural and Musical Show to be held on August 18, 2007 at the Vigie Multi-purpose Sports Complex.

Aaron Alexander, also known as Ras Iron, Vice-President of ICAR told Caribbean Net News that, in the light of current negative happenings, they intend to be about positive influences to all St Lucians, with cultural activities that showcase talent, enhance self-esteem and denounce crime and violence. All this is in keeping with the teachings and preachings of Marcus Garvey.

Garvey was born August 17, 1887, and passed away on June 10, 1940. He was a black nationalist, publisher, entrepreneur, orator, journalist, black separatist, and founder of the United Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA-ACL).
