PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad: Trinidad and Tobago's Prime Minister Patrick Manning has initiated fresh action for impeachment proceedings aimed at removing the country's Chief Justice Satnarine Sharma from office.

This is among the latest developments in the case involving the embattled Chief Justice, who is charged with perverting the course of public justice in relation to the Basdeo Panday trial.

Manning has written to the Chief Justice informing him of his intention to use Section 137 of the country's Constitution, which deals with impeachment. Justice Sharma has been given 14 days to respond.

Meanwhile, Chief Magistrate Shermon McNicolls, who is also involved in the controversy was summoned to court on Wednesday.

McNicolls was due to take the stand to be cross-examined by attorneys for Justice Sharma.

The court was however told that the Chief Magistrate was not available at the time but would be present on Monday to give evidence against the Chief Justice.

McNicolls is quoted as saying that the Chief Justice attempted to influence him in relation to the outcome of the case against former Prime Minister Basdeo Panday.
