Guyana government has zero-tolerance for police corruption, says minister

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (GINA): Guyana's Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee has repeated the government’s zero-tolerance for corruption in wake of the recent surfacing of a taped conversation purporting to be the voice of a senior Superintendent of the Guyana Police Force and a businessman on the proceeds of a drug operation.

“It’s a document (transcript of tape recording) that I believe should be studied carefully to understand the implications of the statement that is purported to be made by the persons who are associated with the statements, and I think that the Guyana Police Force has taken interest in the matter and steps to investigate it,” Rohee told members of the press on Wednesday.
“Anything that has to do with corruption I am concerned about, especially in any area in my sector,” Rohee said.
Senior Superintendent Steve Merai who is at the centre of the allegations, in a recent statement in the media, said the claims were false and the taped recordings were done by drug dealers who were targeting him.
“What we are having is a lot of anecdotal pieces of information. I have not seen any concrete evidence. There is a lot of circumstantial stuff that is going around. People say what they hear and think. There are the Organisation of Professional Responsibility and the Police Complaints Authority which have the right to investigate,” Rohee said.
Acting Commissioner of Police Henry Greene and the Home Affairs Minister have been engaged in meetings on the issue.
“Commissioner and I are very close on this issue. He has been speaking to me from day one… Whether the officer will be sent on leave, it will be left up to the Commissioner’s Office,” the Home Affairs Minister said.
Since the tape surfaced the Commissioner has launched an internal investigation into the matter. | | | | Reads : 154 | | | |
