Letter: The ongoing saga of the West Indies

Published on Friday, June 29, 2007 Email To Friend    Print Version

Dear Sir:

I would like to comment on the ongoing saga within West Indies cricket. The record of the WICBC with regards to the players who represent us has for a long time been suspect and downright rotten. I wish to challenge the WICBC to do more for our players.

We need to have a coach available for each department of the game and ones who know and understand WI cricket. Our heritage is rich with "greats". Let us have a battery of coaches from the finest of the past; Sobers, Lloyd, Khanhai, Holding, Viv Richards, Logie and Harper, to name a few.

Let us have the top 39 players in the region compete against each other in random but balanced teams and then we choose the ones who should represent us.

It seems to me that the Board has lost its focus. I do not want its authority to be undermined but I would like to see our players receive the best training to represent the region.

The way the board is operating is as if it is doing the players a favour. Hell, no! We need them more than the WICBC. Kick the guys out who are not in tune with what we want; that is, a WINNING WEST INDIES TEAM. I guess that would mean the entire Board. That has not been tried and I know if we replace the power-drunk, money-hungry, robbers of WI cricket and replace them with the likes of former WI captains we will have a better board a great and a winning WI cricket team.

Let me say that at the moment I am discussing these issues and I'm prepared (along with a few afluent friends) to ride into town and save WI cricket. Kerry Packer may be dead but his ideas are alive.
