PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad: The Law Association in Trinidad met in special session this week to discuss the issue of the possible suspension of Chief Magistrate Sherman McNicolls.
The 18-member Council held a private meeting at the Association's office on St. Vincent Street in Port-of- Spain.
The only item on the agenda, according to Association Vice-President Hendrickson Seunath SC, was the failure of the Judicial and Legal Service Commission (JLSC) to suspend Chief Magistrate Sherman Mc Nicolls. This follows the Chief Magistrate's refusal to testify in the Chief Justice matter.
A leaked report concluded that Mc Nicolls was guilty of misconduct by his refusal to testify, which led to the collapse of the case in which Justice Sharma was also accused of misconduct in relation to the Basdeo Panday trial.
On March 16, the JLSC passed a resolution in which it recommended to the Director of Public Prosecutions that consideration be given as to whether criminal charges could be brought against the Chief Magistrate in light of the development.
So far details of this latest meeting are yet to be released. |
