Email To Friend Print Version | KINGSTON, Jamaica: 2006 world-best female sprinter Sherone Simpson of Jamaica is set to make a return to the track on 15 July after missing the Jamaican National track and field championships in Kingston, Jamaica, last weekend with a hip injury.
The Commonwealth Games champion, who clocked lifetime bests of 10.82 for the 100m and 22.00 for the 200m last year, will make her comeback at the Norwich Union British Grand Prix in Sheffield.
A source close the athlete's training camp in Kingston said she was doing well and would be ready for the meeting, which will feature several top class athletes from the Caribbean and Europe.
The source also said that reigning World bronze medallist and Commonwealth Games champion Brigitte Foster-Hylton is currently in the US seeking treatment in an effort to make an early return to the track.
Despite missing the national championships, both Simpson and Foster-Hylton could still, however, be selected on the Jamaican team for the World Championship in Osaka if her injuries heal in time.
Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that Asafa Powell may sit out the next leg of the IAAF Golden League meeting in Paris to give himself time to recover for the world championships.
Powell opened on a winning note in Oslo, with a 9.94 run. However, the sprinter has been feeling uncomfortable ever since and after his injury at the national trials last Saturday, he may elect to rest.
"I would say it's about 50/50 chance right now," his manager Paul Doyle said. "It's too early to tell. We are not going to cancel him from the meet as yet." | | | | Reads : 471 | | | |
