GEORGETOWN, Guyana: Guyana's President Bharrat Jagdeo is expected to travel to Japan in the coming days, where he is expected to sign an aid agreement for the water sector and lobby Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe for assistance to curtail the effects of excessive rainfall in the CARICOM nation.

Jagdeo was among the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Heads-of-Government delegation to Washington for the Conference on the Caribbean, which concluded Thursday.

“I will have a meeting with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. In the meeting we will probably focus on bilateral issues. I am sure that the environment will come up and UN Council reform,” the President stated.

Jagdeo has criticised the industrialised nations for failing to cut carbon emissions and expressed disappointment with the annual G8 summit because it failed to reach an agreement on emissions.

"I feel the international community is all about talk and they are not really serious. The countries that really harm the environment are not making the tough decisions needed to change the situation," Jagdeo had stated.

Guyana is currently experiencing above normal rainfall, which authorities said was caused by global warming.

Jagdeo has warned that Guyana will require millions to adjust drainage structures to mitigate flooding.
