KINGSTON, Jamaica: Jamaica’s World Junior record holder Usain Bolt is again preparing himself for another head-to-head clash with his good American friend Wallace Spearmon, who seemed to be always popping up from behind and nipping the Jamaican at the line.
The Jamaican will take on Spearmon and his American counterpart, Xavier Carter, in a strong 200m lineup at the Norwich Union British Grand Prix in Sheffield on 15 July, and he is determined to win the event in his Sheffield debut.
Bolt, the youngest-ever world junior champion, at age 15, when he won the 200m title in Kingston, five years ago, said he is aware of the strong finishes of Spearmon, so he has been working hard on the latter half of his race so as to maintain his momentum for the entire race.
"In the World Cup last year and New York this year I led at 180m but Wallace caught me close to the finish, but as the season goes on I hope I will get him," said Bolt, who is anticipating a good race from his major challengers.
"I've been working hard on the last 30m of my race because I am determined to keep him at bay. We may be friends but we all desperately want to win.
"If the conditions are right I really want to be able to do something special at the Don Valley, and give the crowd something to shout about."
Meanwhile, Bolt will be looking to book a slot on the Jamaican team for the World Championships in Osaka, Japan, in August, when he goes in the men's 200m dash at the Jamaica National Championships in Kingston, also this weekend.
Challenging the young talent will be the experienced Chris Williams (20.17), who is in great form this season, Marvin Anderson (20.32), who is also expected to be a factor in the 100m, Omar Brown, the Commonwealth Games gold medallist as well as Ricardo Williams and the in-form Clement Campbell. |
