BVI Legislative Council without a Deputy Speaker

ROAD TOWN, BVI: The post of deputy speaker of the British Virgin Islands' Legislative Council became vacant when Delores Christopher was appointed as acting Minister of Natural Resources and Labour.

This post was recently held by Eileen Parsons.

Ms Christopher is acting in this position for the period February 23 to March 4.

The appointment of Christopher was necessitated by the absence from the territory of three government ministers at the same time.

The Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister are in London involved in constitutional talks and Parsons is overseas due to ill health.

The constitution states that no business shall be transacted at any meeting of the council if there are less than three members present besides the Governor or other person presiding.

With Christopher no longer Deputy Speaker of the House, an official from the Legislative Council says a new deputy will not be sworn in until the next sitting of the House.

The constitution states that a minister of government cannot hold the position of deputy speaker.
