SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic: Poll survey results by a US firm based in Washington DC indicate that if the Dominican Republic’s presidential election was held today, President Leonel Fernandez would be re-elected by almost 50 percent of the votes.

The actual presidential elections will be held in May 2008.

His closest opponent, PRD candidate Miguel Maldonado, would be expected to garner over 30 percent of the votes, with the recently elected PRSC candidate on the primary ballot, Aristy Castro, receiving a little over 10 percent of the votes.

The results of the poll by Penn, Schoen and Berland were presented to members of the press on Tuesday.
