Email To Friend Print Version | Dear Sir:
I read with interest in Caribbean Net News, which is on the ball with regional news, that CARICOM will send a team to St Vincent to observe the Referendum.
This is good news. However, I would like to make the point that CARICOM and the Organisation of American States (OAS) view the referendum as an important development in the country's history and are treating it like a general election.
This brings me to the point why government has to fund the "YES" campaign and not the ruling Unity Labour Party (ULP), and if government is to finance the campaign it should do likewise for the Opposition New Democratic Party, which is advocating a Vote NO.
I am looking forward with keen interest to the composition of the team since the request was made by Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves, who would like to see some of his cronies in the team.
I recall Lester Bird protested when Mia Mottley, Barbados Labour Party leader, was included in the observer team to Antigua since she was close to Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer, but Bird's protest fell on deaf ears.
I am happy to learn that the OAS will be sending a team as well, since at the last general elections OAS assistant secretary, Albert Ramdin, made comments that to my mind were not favourable to the administration when he said he was surprised to see so many voters in a country with such small population.
