Suriname's maritime authority receives ISO 9001:2008 designation

 Maritime Authority Suriname celebrating
PARAMARIBO, Suriname -- The Maritime Authority Suriname (MAS) is taking its services to higher heights. The MAS became one of the few semi‐governmental agencies in Suriname as well as within the Dutch and English-speaking Caribbean to receive ISO 9001:2008 certification.
With this positive result the company has showed that the ISO quality management procedures were still being followed, after one year of the ISO 9001:2000 certification. This announcement was made by Edouard F Dekkers of the international certification institute EQA.
“This is an amazing achievement and it is a showpiece. Especially for the expanding of our services to the region”, MAS quality manager, Orfeo Weibolt, noted. According to him the ISO certification is another proof that the MAS is operating in keeping with international standards. In terms of follow‐up, every company that has been certified, are expected to demonstrate yearly that the quality management system is still being followed.
Director Michel Amafo pointed out that the re‐designation of the company can be compared with the well‐known Surinamese proverb “Dyompo teki taki a noti, ma fu tan hori, dat’ na ing”; which means perseverance is very important to achieve one’s goals. The process that has been set out by the MAS is one of excellence at which mediocrity is not tolerated, said the senior executive.
He congratulated the employees that have made this milestone possible and as well as the total Surinamese community.
Nationally and internationally the MAS has a bigger role to play. The importance of the maritime authority for the economic grow of Suriname is clear. Developments globally are increasingly requiring high standards, in the interest of safety, secure and environmental friendly shipping operations.
The MAS supervises the compliance of legal rules in shipping. The company guarantees a safe and efficient passage of sea‐going vessels from and to Suriname based on internationally accepted standards, rules and treaties ratified by Suriname. The MAS pursues to become the best maritime authority in the region.
As an certified company the MAS is specialized in conducting several services such as hydrographical surveys according to IHO standards (SP 44), depth measurement and waterway marking in accordance with international standards, the marking or signposting of the waterways (to guide the shipping traffic in the safe and right direction), fairway maintenance, processing of survey data and silt density measurement. In order to meet the international requirements the company has a well trained staff and a multipurpose hydrographic vessel classed by Lloyd’s Register.
