SANTO DOMINGO. Dominican Republic: President Leonel Fernandez has promised to provide government help after the continuous heavy rains over the last week, especially in the northern part of the Dominican Republic, which has caused ten deaths, numerous injuries and considerable damage due to flooding and mudslides.

Fernandez has allocated some US$30 million to assist the affected areas. There have been numerous injuries, damage to homes, bridges and roads and also a loss of agriculture. Civil Defence and Red Cross volunteers have assisted in the evacuation of over 5,000 persons from devastated areas.

Whilst it is anticipated that the rains may start to abate in the northern part of the country, the National Metrological Office has advised that caution should be taken when returning to flooded areas and that sudden showers may return without warning.
