Montserrat breaks ground for new broadcasting facility

BRADES, Montserrat: Acting Chief Minister Idabelle Meade led a special ceremony to signal the start of construction of state of the art broadcasting facilities on Montserrat.

The ground breaking ceremony on Friday 1st June 2007, took place at the site in St. Peters, identified for the building of a new home to house Radio Montserrat and the Government Information Unit and Television studios. 

Meade explained: “Since the acquisition of this land in St. Peters, the Honourable Chief Minister has looked at several other options including a site at the Government Headquarters, for various reasons this site proved to be the most acceptable. Radio Montserrat is a national icon and deserving of a prestigious home here at Hill Top in St. Peters. The business of information communication has grown to be a billion dollar industry and the Government of Montserrat has to position itself to take full advantage. We have to have the resources to do so, and this facility designed by my staff at the Public Works Department with the assistance of Radio Montserrat, GIU and other officials will be the cutting edge of media broadcasting, it will assist to improve professional standards and service and boost staff morale”.

The new state of the art building will be the permanent home for the Government’s only broadcasting organization and its information dissemination unit.

Radio Montserrat currently operates in a converted dwelling house housed, since moving offices during the volcanic situation.

Station manager Herman Sargeant said: “Radio Montserrat has been operating in temporary accommodations for twelve long years, twelve long years of hardship and suffering, with staff having to work in less than favourable conditions, poor facilities cramped space and a lot more. Speaking on behalf of myself and my staff, let me say we are very happy, happier than you perhaps thing and we are looking forward to the day we operate from proper costumed-built radio facilities, studios, newsroom office and so forth”.

The new home for Radio Montserrat and the Government Information Unit will boast the latest digital studios for radio and television broadcast, offices, newsrooms and production studios.
