Email To Friend Print Version | ROAD TOWN, BVI: People in the British Virgin Islands wishing to travel to Jamaica must have a visa with effect from Friday.
The Government of the BVI was notified by the Government of Jamaica this week that a visa regime for BVIslanders travelling to Jamaica will take effect from June 1.

| British Virgin Islands Chief Minister, Dr Orlando Smith |
Chief Minister Dr Orlando Smith received a letter from Prime Minister of Jamaica Portia Simpson Miller stating that “Jamaica, in keeping with the principle of reciprocity, has decided to introduce visa requirements for nationals of the British Virgin Islands as of June 1, 2007.”
No procedural details were given but the Prime Minister gave assurance in the letter that her Government will provide information on the application process, prior to the entry into force of the new regime.
Persons travelling to Jamaica on Virgin Islands Passports, however, will need a visa to enter Jamaica.
The Chief Minister said when he spoke with the Prime Minister in October last year informing her of the territory’s regime for Jamaican nationals, she said that while she understood the rationale of the decision, it would be inevitable that her country would reciprocate, so he expected this decision.
On January 9, 2007, the Chief Minister announced a visa regime for Jamaican nationals wishing to travel to the BVI which took effect April 1, 2007. |
