Cuba's Robles starts season with victory

HAVANA, Cuba (ACN) -- Cuban hurdler Dayron Robles, 2008 Beijing Olympic champion and world record holder (12.87 sec), raced to victory at the Thessaloniki 2009 track meet on Wednesday.

Robles, 22, is coming back from a thigh injury that kept him off of the tracks since last year. After a training camp in Ecuador, Robles will now face a series of races prior to the Berlin Track and Field World Championships, where he will try to become the first Cuban to win this kind of events.
On Wednesday, the Cuban hurdler clocked 13.60 seconds, to easily win this first race, followed by American Aries Merrit (13.45) and the other Cuban present at the meeting, Dayron Capetillo, finished third with a 13.63 sec mark.
At the end of the event Robles said he had had a "relaxed race" since it had been his first official one this year.
Meanwhile, in the women’s event Anay Tejeda from Cuba as well, won the silver medal with 13.12, trailing Jamaican Delloreen Ennis-London (13.08).
