Letter: Interesting letter from Adrian Loveridge

Dear Sir:

Adrian Loveridge - Cruise Ships - May 24 '07

Interesting letter from Adrian Loveridge. But what do we expect from the vast majority of people who choose to visit the islands by this means. From personal experience I can tell you that most visitors don't even know which island they're on.

For a couple of years or so I ran a 'Day Charter' business on Antigua and gave myself the job of acting as skipper, host, and purveyor of good food and freely flowing liquid refreshment! We had a contract with one of the more 'up-market' cruise ships visiting the island weekly. I had a bet running with my crew of the number of guests who would ask 'what island is that skipper'? as we turned left after running down St John's harbour and the leeward coast of the island became visible.

I recall asking some of them, one beautiful January day, on which island they had visited at New Year. They didn't have a clue.

Every island is fascinatingly different as we know, but don't expect most cruise ship passengers to give a damn.
