“As you know we share long-term, good relations with your country and we see that the potential for economic cooperation is great. My visit here is to try and learn about the country and to promote Chinese investment,” Jianping said.
He explained that in many sectors of the country the possibility of lucrative ventures exists.
“You have a lot of resources China has a big market for,” Jianping said, citing the examples of sugar, timber and bauxite.
The Bank’s Assistant Governor highlighted Guyana’s continuous move towards hydro power. He said China has a lot of expertise in this area.
Jianping was accompanied by the Chinese Ambassador to Guyana, Zhang Jungao and Li Yunzhi, Deputy Division Chief International Finance Department.
The CDB, founded in March 1994 and led by Governor Chen Yuan is a major player in long-term financing for key projects.
Members of the private sectors of Guyana and China gathered for the first Guyana/China Investment Symposium at the Foreign Services Institute (FSI) Building in February 2006.
During the meeting presentations on the investment climate in both China and Guyana were made as a familiarisation process for those in the private sector who have not done business with China or Guyana and were considering doing so.
In November 1971, China and Guyana signed an Agreement on the Mutual Establishment of Commercial Offices. China’s office was set up in Guyana in March, a year later paving the way for the establishment of diplomatic relations on June 27, 1972.
Guyana was the first English-speaking Caribbean country to establish diplomatic relations with China. Since then, the two States have enjoyed smooth, long-term and cordial relations with a frequent exchange of high-level visits and close cooperation in the international sphere.
In March 2003, at the invitation of President Hu Jintao, President Jagdeo paid a State visit to China. An agreement for the protection of investment and economic and technological cooperation was inked. Currently China’s main exports to Guyana include industrial and agricultural implements, textiles and light industrial products. |
