Opposition party calls for equal housing opportunities in Trinidad and Tobago

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad: Citizens of Trinidad and Tobago must be afforded equal opportunities to proper housing on the basis of need, not political patronage, Congress of the People founding member, Dr Sharon Gopaul McNicol has said.

Speaking at a political meeting in the constituency of San Juan/Barataria on Tuesday, McNicol said: "There must be equal opportunity for all in housing. Housing should be distributed on the basis of need, not political patronage. In the marginal seats now, the people who are in need are not getting houses because the Government has to bring in people to ensure they increase voter support."

The clinical psychologist also warned: "Under the PNM and UNC leadership, what you are seeing now is exactly what you will get."

Speaking on national unity, Mc Nicol told supporters: "Unity is about all of us uniting. It is not on the basis of race and political party, but on the basis of character, humanity and caring."

Also speaking at the meeting was Toco/Sangre Grande nominee, Dr Lena Brereton Wolffe who slammed the Patrick Manning administration's poor performance in its six years of office.

"We have had enough of the heavy weight of the sins of this Government and the Opposition on the backs of the citizens of this land."

"Citizens of this land are made to feel like aliens in their own country. You have to keep hiding and ducking and running in your own country because the Government has no respect for your right to affordable and accessible homes."

Dr Brereton Wolffe added: "Go to a housing development being done by the Government, the rooms in these houses are so small you can't even change your mind! There are no drains, no community centres, no recreational facilities. I say the biggest law breaker in the land is the Government itself. They have made the laws of the land null and void."
