HAVANA, Cuba (ACN): Cuba's Ministry of Tourism (MINTUR) is said to be very enthusiastic about the development strategies in that sector, defined some 15 years ago as "the locomotive of the national economy."

The website www.cubatravel.cu highlights the success of the 2007 International Tourism Fair (Fitcuba-2007) that just concluded in Havana with the participation of over 1,150 professionals from 56 countries.

Fitcuba-2008, scheduled for May next year, will be dedicated to the integration tourism-culture and will focus on the Italian market, which brings over 140,000 visitors to the island annually.

Cuban Minister for Tourism Manuel Marrero assured participants that the formation of new joint ventures would be encouraged as part of the strategy to revitalize foreign investment in this "hospitality industry."

"These joint ventures will be able to build new hotels, renovate others to increase their standards and quality, and invest in golf clubs, international marinas and theme parks," said Marrero.

Among other current projects, the minister mentioned the construction of some 30 hotels -which will add 10,000 rooms- and investments in 26 new facilities that include 10 golf clubs.

Also proposed is the building of "E Hotels", fifty smaller and medium size city hotels with patrimonial value in different locations of the country, concluded Marrero.
