Letter: In response to Salome James' letter

Published on Tuesday, May 8, 2007 Email To Friend    Print Version

Dear Sir:

On May 7, 2007, you printed a letter by Salome James stating that the sources I cite on male victims of domestic violence only relate to "research in the developed world" and therefore do not apply to the Caribbean.

However, the online California State University bibliography I cited includes at least one study in Belize and Puerto Rico, which found wives used violence as often as husbands and that wives who used violence "tended to use greater amounts." See Steinmetz, Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare. The 32-nation study I cited, which included Tanzania and South Africa, confirmed the same thing.

But even if only 1% of domestic violence victims in the English-speaking Caribbean were men, that still wouldn't justify ignoring them. It doesn't take an expert to know every victim should count.
