Reunion 2008 launched in Dominica

ROSEAU, Dominica:  Over 600 people packed the grounds of the State House in Dominica’s capital city, Roseau and thousands more joined in via the internet for a night of Dominica’s very best in culture, art, music and song as Reunion 2008 was officially launched on Monday.

Dominicans and friends of Dominica were treated to a tableaux viva, images depicting and promoting various aspects of Dominica’s rich and varied cultural heritage in the form of statues and mannequins.

As invited guests walked from the entrance of the State House to the front, they saw participants in sensay, creole wear, carib costumes and neg mawon as well as images of freed slaves.

During the formal segment of the launch, the feature address was delivered by Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit. 

The unveiling of the Reunion 2008 logo and theme was done by the acting President of Dominica, Conrad McIntyre. The logo was designed by Depex Colour Lab with assistance from one of the Caribbean’s most renowned cultural icons and Reunion 2008 Committee member, Dominican-born  Alwyn Bully.

One of the highlights of an evening of introspection, music, colour and culture was the performance of the Reunion 2008 theme song. The theme song, Celebrating the Journey Together, was written and composed by one of Dominica’s most accomplished singers, Michele Henderson. Michele was also joined on stage by the three -time calypso, King Dennison ‘Dice’ Joseph, Lloyd Jno Baptiste from the First Serenade band and teenage singing prodigy, Tarina Simon.

Entertainment was also provided by Karifuna Cultural Group from the Carib Territory, Dominica Folk Singers, Ti Bwa, Paix Bouche Bele Group, Waitukubuli Dance Theatre Company, Derrick ‘De Hunter’ St. Rose, 2007 Calypso King and Genesis Steel Orchestra.

Activities for Reunion year 2008, which will run from January to December, 2008, will focus on the following areas and themes: Education; Environment, Botanic Gardens, National Monuments; Festivals/Expositions; Science and Technology, Wellness-Celebrating longevity, Diaspora, sports and games among others.

Reunion 2008 is being seen as a Renaissance Year for Dominica. It is being promoted as a time for introspection, assessment and rebirth. 

November 3, 2008, will mark thirty years since Dominica attained political independence from Great Britain.
