His announcement co-incided with rallies throughout Santo Domingo and the surrounding areas. Successful rallies nationwide have been held over the last month which, he said, encouraged his decision to continue and confirmed that his past performances as president have been well received.

The rallies concluded with a 15km march, which was exceptionally well-attended and occurred without incident.

The PLD Party is due to hold its primary elections on Sunday and it is anticipated that over one million party members are eligible to vote.

Fenandez, speaking last Saturday at a rally in the province of Elias Pina, in the south west part of the Dominican Republic, stated that he was extremely confident of victory and expected to win at least 85-90% of the total votes in the primary elections.
