ROSEAU, Dominica: “‘The boys have made us very proud, especially the level of discipline that they sustained throughout the competition’”. These were the words of the mayor of Roseau, Cecil Joseph, following his return to Dominica from Guadeloupe, along with 12 juvenile footballers, who captured the second place award in the Tournoi Mondial Club Football tournament.

The tournament was held in Guadeloupe on December 21, 2008, where 12 players represented Dominica, accompanied by Jeffery Edmund, Hilda Kelshall, Jerry Copeil and the mayor. The mayor said that he was very pleased with the level of discipline displayed by the players.

“I was very much taken aback to see their high level of discipline. I know that a number of persons are saying that they are not too sure as to what the future is like, but looking at the discipline of the young boys, the coaches and trainers did not have any problems with them in terms of talking. I want to compliment the boys and also the parents, for the upbringing of these youngsters,” the mayor said.

Coach of the team, Jerry Copeil, said that they wish to continue the regional cooperation among players in the region, so as to expose the young players to greater opportunities in the sport. He noted that despite the unfavourable conditions, the youngsters preformed well. Captain of the team, Jeffery Edmund, believes that apart from the sport, the trip also had some educational benefits for the players.

Director of the Newtown Juvenile Academy, Don Leogal, said that opportunities like these will seek to sharpen the skills of the players at an early age, which will impact positively in future games. He expressed thanks to the parents who gave players the opportunity to represent the island.

“We at the academy are very proud of you and very happy that we took the decision to participate in the tournament. We saw this as a good opportunity to expose them at a very early age to make them see what the competition is like on the other side. We know what we are supposed to do and what we need to do to make us better footballers and better ambassadors for our country,” Leogal emphasised.

One of the players, D’vaugh Serrant was named the most valuable player. The other players were Quami Belle, Diego Francis, Malik Francis, Montell James, Andrez Joseph, Zachary Magloire, Peter Mahisted, Gylles Mitchel, Kerym Registe, Ajani Spence and Curnaldo Thomas.
